Roaches Line

Roaches Line is a farming area. It has a large sheep farm which breeds purebred sheep. Although most people associate the region with the sea, the Baccalieu Trail is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the province. Approximately twenty-five percent of the on farm value of agriculture in the province is in this area.

The home of Joey Smallwood (1900-1991), who led Newfoundland into confederation with Canada, is located on Roaches Line. He became. the first premier of Newfoundland when it became a province in Canadian Confederation in 1949 and remained in that position for 23 years. His home is not open for public viewing.

Many people look at the weathervane horse on top of the hill near his home on the opposite side of the road to determine the direction of the wind.
