Tilton,
part of the municipality of Spaniards Bay, is at the intersection
of Route 70 and 73 to New Harbour. Route 73 also joins Veterans
Memorial Drive. In the early 1800s temporary shelters (or tilts)
were built there, resulting in the name Tilt Town, which was eventually
shortened to Tilton.

Spaniard's
Bay was probably frequented by Basque and Portuguese fishermen
(referred to as ``Spaniards'' by English fishermen) in the 1500s
and 1600s.
The
Labrador fishery was important to the economy. Every spring schooners
left for The Labrador, some containing whole families,
and returned home in the fall..
Traditional
rock walls are seen scattered throughout the community. "Lassy
Wall," which can be seen on the shore line in front of
the Anglican Church, was constructed by community residents
who were paid with molasses.
