"A Hope and A
Prayer " was painted by Kelly McEntegart-Sheppard in memory of her grandmother, Ada (Best) Barrett. The inspiration for this work came from the loss of her grandmother's three brothers on the schooner the
"Ada and Maude" in 1935. The "Ada and Maude" set sail from Best's Harbour (Tacks Beach), Placentia Bay and was on route to St. John's. Four days after she left port, word came home that the vessel went ashore in a small community, Lear's Cove, on the Cape Shore. Reports stated that the vessel came in through the rocky narrows in full sail, all materials intact. Even a game of cards still on the table, but no crew members were ever found. An investigation concluded that the boat could not come through the narrow rocks unmanned, and that foul-play was indeed involved. As to the fate of the "Best Boys", no closure was ever found for the family.
