Then on to Whiteway; a
traditional fishing village famous for community spirit and the Shag Rock. Also referred
to as the "shipwrecker", this large triple-horned rock is jutting sharply out of
the water just a few hundred metres from shore, and offers a reminder of the dangers of
the sea. It is especially beautiful when icebergs go aground near the rock!
Heart's Content
is a popular stop for a visit to The Heart's Content Cable Station, a Provincial Historic
Site where the first successful Transatlantic Telegraph Cable was landed in 1866. The
cable station houses a visitor information centre and equipment display, explaining the
important role Heart's Content played in the Transatlantic Communication for over 100
years
.
The lighthouse on
the point offers a spectacular view and makes a perfect backdrop for a postcard picture.
While in New Perlican
take a walk on the Shoreline Trail to " Bloody Point'",
where a battle took place between the French and the English in the 1600's. A modern day
lighthouse now sits here replacing the original that was built in 1960.
Scattered throughout the community are saltbox houses, many of which are over 100 years
old.
